Jersey Royals 🥔
The Jersey Royal potato is a branded variety that has been granted EU Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in June 1996, making it unique in the United Kingdom. This is similar to Champagne, Camembert cheese, and Parma ham, which are also protected and promoted so that they can only be obtained from their specific, designated regions of origin.
The PDO ensures that only Royals grown in Jersey could be referred to it as "Jersey Royals."
Richardson’s Jersey Royals is Jersey’s oldest farming families, having played a part in shaping farming history since the early 1500s. This heritage is deeply ingrained in them and makes them all the more determined to find new ways to drive this legacy forward to the next generation. They employed first-class farming methods with close attention to lifting dates. Each potato is hand-picked and carefully placed in their unique packaging. Since 2015, They’ve successfully expanded and improved on the concept of freshly hand-picked Jersey Royals, previously only available from roadside stalls.
Unique to Richardson’s, from lifting to grading, the whole process happens on the specially developed hand-picking potato harvester, where the team is hand-picking and sorting the potatoes as the machine is lifting the plants; creating a continuous harvesting cycle as the tractor makes its way across the fields.
The potato plants are lifted by the machine, where firstly the stalks are shaken manually to release the potatoes from the uplifted plants before the picking team pick them onto conveyor belts that gently convey them into the showering system.
This very gentle system uses clean potable water to gently dissolve the soil away from the potatoes without disturbing their delicate skins. The potatoes are then coated by hand with coir to ensure protection and extended freshness when packed back at the farms packhouse.
We’re very excited to be working with Doug on such great product. Please note that the pack size will change as the season carries on.
